Pre-Shot Routine
We can learn alot from watching golf on tv, all you have to do is watch the pros. Study Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson or any of the top pros and you will see that each one of them have a distinctive pre-shot routine and you should have one also. Do not underestimate the importance of a consistant pre-shot routine, it can be considered a pre-shot rehearsal which can give you confidence lowering your score. You need to develop a routine the suites you, everyones routine can be different, it all depends on the golfer. So lets look at what makes up a powerful pre-shot rehearsal.
- First you should always start by lining yourself up behind the ball looking towords the hole. Then you want to focus on where you want your ball to land and now try to envision the shot you will need to make this happen. This is critical if you are looking for any type of success. If you can not imagine the shot in your mind you will have a hard time trying to execute the shot.
- Now that you have the image of the shot in your head, all you need do now is pick the club that will do what you pictured. When picking your club always play to your strengths, you may prefer to hit a full 6 iron or a soft 5.
- You should pick a intermediate target that is inline with your target, something that is a 2 feet from the ball, it is easier and more accurate than aiming at a target 250 yards away. You will use this itermediate target to line up your clubface.
- This is when you will make a practice swing. You can do this while you are still behind the ball or after you have approached the ball, it is your routine make it what is right for you. The pupose of the practice is to get a feel of the shot that you envisioned, this will get your body in tune with what your mind sees.
- Now you will address the ball fully commited to your shot. Make sure you are aligned properly, set your club behind the ball to your intermediate target and when ready make your shot.
Remember to make this routine yours and practice your routine on the driving range. This is something that you want to do instictively, it is difficult to learn while you are on course and something might be on the line.
I hope this helps!
