Tom Watson will be back for more British Opens

Score one for the R&A Golf Club, which addressed a suddenly-problematic exemption rule by allowing Tom Watson to play in another five Opens .

Of course, they didn’t mention Watson by name, but they didn’t need to. Under the old rules, Watson would have been booted because of age , but the new exemption allows former champions who finish in the top 10 of any Open another five years’ worth of exemptions. It’s a smart move, ensuring that legends will continue to be in the field for as long as they’re playing quality golf.

Tom-Watson-071909LWatson, as you no doubt recall, played fairly well in this past year’s Open at Turnberry. There was considerable concern that his days were numbered in the Open because of the age limits, but we called that out as a dumb idea. And the R&A took our advice ! How about that? In the end, that’s really good news. After the way he took Stewart Cink to a playoff in last year’s Open Championship, I’ve got a feeling it’s only a matter of time before this Watson kid breaks through.

Improve Your Distance With Lighter Golf Grips?

We have started a new season of golf and the golf manufacturers are doing everything possible to their equipment to give us more distance. In fact a major golf grip manufacturer has introduced a new golf grip that is significantly lighter than normal grips. The manufacturer states they “reduced grip weight to increase club swing speed and generate greater distance and accuracy”. Sounds good but will lighter golf grips help the average golfer? Frank Thomas is the inventor of the graphite shaft. Frank has served 26 years as technical director of the United States Golf Association (USGA), he also directed the development of the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN).  Read More →

Sink More Putts Using The Gate Drill - Putting Tip

Here is a putting tip that will help you to sink more putts. The gate drill will teach you to hit the ball in the center of the putter face, making consistent contact in the center of the putter face for straight putts and  better distance control. This drill is definitely the drill to work on if you are having problems putting. Here is how it works. Place a ball on the ground and  place your putter behind the ball. Now place two tees in the ground, the first at the toe of the putter and the second tee at the heel of the putter. Make sure the gate you are making is wide enough for the putter to pass through, giving yourself around 1/2″ on each side of the putter. Now start putting the ball. The idea is to accelerate through the ball, making contact with the ball in the center or the putter face.  If you find that your putter hits the inside tee, you are contacting the ball with the toe of the putter, if you are hitting the outside tee, you are contacting the ball with the heel of the putter  In both cases you are not making contact with the center of the putter face, which will lead to inconsistent shots. Here is a video where Hank Haney is demonstrating the Gate Drill using a training aid from Eyeline Golf. Work on this drill and I’m sure your putting will improve.  Read More →

Golf Tip by Ian Poulter

Like most golfers we find ourselves in the trees from time to time. Here is a video golf tip by Ian Poulter on how to get out of the trees. Most of the time it is better to chip out. But if you can make the shot, you might still get par.  Read More →

Hit Down and Chip Better - Golf Tips

Does this sound familiar, you have hit 2 great shots on a par 5 and now only 15 yards from the pin. There is no bunker, nothing to go over, just a 15 yard chip. You take a practice shot, then step up to the ball and make your swing. You chunk it. Yes you hit behind the ball and only advancing the ball 6 yards, leaving yourself with another 9 yard chip. You try to brush it off, telling yourself  “it’s ok , I can still chip it in for birdie or get it close and tap it in for par”. Again you take your practice swing, step up to the ball, this time you skull it. You stand in disbelief, looking at the ball that is now 33 feet away from the pin. The only good thing is, you are on the green and don’t have to chip again. Anyways you end up 2 putting the green for 6. What should have been an easy birdie, ends up being a boggie. What happened? Here is what happened: First,  we are hitting up on the ball instead of hitting down. The shot where we hit behind the ball (chunked), we tried to get the club under the ball to get the ball in the air. When the clubhead hits the ground first, all the speed of your clubhead (the power) is absorbed by the ground, leaving nothing for when it hits the ball, resulting in shorter than expected distance. The skull is again caused by hiting up on the ball and in this case, because of the chunked ball. On this shot we tried to miss the ground and the leading edge of the clubhead hit the ball above the equator. This sends a low shot that rockets past the cup. Golf Fix It : The key to better chipping is to hit down on the ball. We want to strike the ball first and then the ground just forward of the ball. We also need to remember to accelerate through the ball at impact, this acceleration through impact gives us better distance control and we will strike the ground after crisp contact with the ball. Here is a video that will help you with your chips around the green. There is a practice drill that will help you get the feel of making solid contact with the ball by striking down on the ball first and ground second. Practice this drill and I’m sure that you will be striking better chips and lowering your score.  Read More →
